Project #5

1. Picasso's work Guernica is a narrative art piece designed in a very interesting way. It is done in a cubist style with very sharp defined lines cutting the major pieces within the art work from each other creating straight lines through out. The color scheme is important to display a dark mentality in the piece. This is done due to the time period it was created. The image has characters in it in seeming dis-pare and suffering all lending to the gravity of the situation the piece is used to represent being the time around world war ll.
2. Picasso was responding to the actions of the Nazi regime that was dismantling Europe at the time the piece was created. The piece was meant to signify the attacks on innocent people and injustice being caused by the Nazi's. The images that are suffering in the painting are the innocent people. The bull like figures are the Nazi's destroying everything in the area.
3. The work that was created is directly related to the actions that were happening at the time. The piece became a symbol of the tragedies of war and violence. Innocent people being killed by the bull of a group the Nazi's. The painting is meant to demonstrate a peaceful opposition to fascism.
4. In the piece the figures on the group that look to be in pain would be the people who were suffering at the hands of the Nazi's. The Nazi's were the figures in the painting that seem to be like a the bull looking creates. The painting is meant to force a feeling of remorse on the hands of the Nazi's and the painting also is meant to be a very surreal image of what war brings.
5. I felt the strengths of this piece was the color and symbolism used to demonstrate the darkness going on in the time. However i felt the weakness was the sbility to connect the images in the piece to images of the time. Without prior knowlwdge of when the piece was done it could be very difficult to make the connections.
