Final post

1. Thinking back to what my expectations were of this course I knew it would allow me a chance to expand my understanding of what the concept of art is and how its viewed in the world we live in through the eyes of various people. I believe this course did meet my expectations it was able to go in depth showing so many different styles of art and how they impact the world and how they vary from location to location, it was extremely informative. The course allowed for a vast opportunity to become a more well rounded person over all.
2. After finishing this course I believe my definition hasnt changed a ton and I believe this is due to the way I viewed it before. I always have felt art is a concept that is unique to the individual, it is anything that a person can see, hear, visualize, or understand and in some way have a feeling as a result the feeling can be happiness, sadness, excitement, ect. Thats the power of art to me is the fact that it can be and often is different to every single person.
3. I believe my current favorite artist would be Van Gough due to his ability to create such unique pieces that still have such a lasting impact on art today. He influenced not only some many works of art but also the artist that have created them.
4. My feeling about taking an online class hasn't changed, I knew previously how to take them and what to expect. I was surprised at how well it was able to due an art based course online I would have assumed it would be more difficult to relate and communicate for a class about art but this class was run well and a joy to participate in.

Blog peer Review

http://artinq.blogspot.com/
Project one review:
1. When looking at the photos in the blog seeing the themes represented I feel the work was done quite well. The images match the theme perfectly and were done with a lot of thoughtfulness to make sure to enrapture the intent.
Sadly the second project wasn't completed so I choose a different classmates to use for that.
2. Again the classmate did a great job selecting images for the use of representing the themes in the project. I wish I had been able to be more creative with this project with the images how my classmates were they did well finding new and different ways to represent the themes.

Project 2 review
1. La Source De La Loue was a image that was the same as one that both my classmate and I used from the art Gallery. Our reason wasn't exactly the same for why we choose it but it was similar, we both were drawn to the darkness in the image it was different form the majority which were brightly colored so something about the darkness and rushing water pull me into the unknown factor about the piece.
2. For the second classmate we did not have any art works that were the same between the two of us. However I do like the pieces they choose they are intriguing and have a good reasoning for picking them. One that I specifically was drawn to and would like to know more about would be The Marina Piccola. This piece is a scene of almost a desert mountain seen where I got the feeling it was one of pure peace and quite this interested me that it was able to demonstrate such calmness.

The process of peer review and reflection I feel is extremely valuable to the learning process especially  with a art class it allows you to get a understanding of how others are seeing the same works of art as you. This creates a new ability to be able to understand the works better your self.
The part I like best about this is having a chance to look into my classmates works they enjoy and to see what they enjoy about them this creates more unity in how we see things or gives a whole new insight on the art work.

As of right now none of my pieces have been commented on but I do look forward to read what people will have written about mine. I want to be able to learn from my classmates to see if they see things in a similar or different way than I do.

Project #5

1. Picasso's work Guernica is a narrative art piece designed in a very interesting way. It is done in a cubist style with very sharp defined lines cutting the major pieces within the art work from each other creating straight lines through out. The color scheme is important to display a dark mentality in the piece. This is done due to the time period it was created. The image has characters in it in seeming dis-pare and suffering all lending to the gravity of the situation the piece is used to represent being the time around world war ll.
2. Picasso was responding to the actions of the Nazi regime that was dismantling Europe at the time the piece was created. The piece was meant to signify the attacks on innocent people and injustice being caused by the Nazi's. The images that are suffering in the painting are the innocent people. The bull like figures are the Nazi's destroying everything in the area.
3. The work that was created is directly related to the actions that were happening at the time. The piece became a symbol of the tragedies of war and violence. Innocent people being killed by the bull of a group the Nazi's. The painting is meant to demonstrate a peaceful opposition to fascism.
4. In the piece the figures on the group that look to be in pain would be the people who were suffering at the hands of the Nazi's. The Nazi's were the figures in the painting that seem to be like a the bull looking creates. The painting is meant to force a feeling of remorse on the hands of the Nazi's and the painting also is meant to be a very surreal image of what war brings.
5. I felt the strengths of this piece was the color and symbolism used to demonstrate the darkness going on in the time. However i felt the weakness was the sbility to connect the images in the piece to images of the time. Without prior knowlwdge of when the piece was done it could be very difficult to make the connections.

Pencil drawing

1.I selected the three inspirational pieces that I did because I found it impressive how portraits could have so much variation and still be a representative work of the person who did the drawing or painting.
2. I selected to do my self  portrait in pencil because I felt it gave me the most control over the lines that I was creating making my portrait as crisp and clean as possible.
3. In creating my self portrait the largest challenge I encountered was trying to make it perfect and to look spot on like me. Knowing im not a artist in the famous sense i felt if I was happy with the piece and that it met my expectations of my self and knowing im not perfect and neither is the drawing then I was happy with it.
4. This piece represents me by showing that no im not perfect or symmetrical or flawless and neither is the work I made. I broke my nose in high school making it look off center and just like in reality it is in the drawing.
5. In this work I made an effort to use lines even if they werent straight lines I wanted to use definite lines to make the pieces outline stand out the most.
6. I did enjoy working on this piece, I have never had a large faith in myself in creating works of art and especially not with creating one of myself but for this I choose to accept what i was creating as a work of myself by myself which was what was most important to myself.
7. I think my final art work is representative of my lack of ability but not lack of trying. Knowing im not the most talented but i put in the effort to create a work in a attempt to represent myself and that whats important to me.

week 13/14 video review

1. Each of the videos I watched allowed me a chance to look at how different styles of art are being displayed and understood in the cultures we have today that may not directly conform to the ideals that existed when the art was being created. It was interesting to see how the view on some art is different depending on the time it is created such as the lowbrow art style which was seen mostly as a hippie movement but is far more in depth than that.
2. The videos relate to the current art project I am working on because in any choice of styles or art to represent it is important to see how it has been viewed and changed over the years or decades since its creation. It never stops being impressive the lengths people will go to in order to ensure the preservation of art.
3. I believe the films were very helpful. The film on lowbrow I found the most interesting because it is such a uncommon style to me. But it is also very interesting and I found it interesting that it got a bad reputation because you can see the results of its style in society in many places even today.

Photo videos

1. I choose the two videos I did because I knew the name Andy Warhol but didn't know much about him so I figured that video would allow me a chance to learn more about a figure I sorta knew about. With the video on Hockney it was also about photography so i wanted to see the difference from that to Warhols works.
2. The key item in the video about Warhol was to show about his famed images of the same faces in many different contexts. To demonstrate how they begin as a negative of a picture to become a multiple variation image. Hockney's video also went into the demonstration of his ability with  camera to create works of art. It showed how he took pictures over years to create images within images.
3. The videos really were able to demonstrate how the camera and pictures have changed the world of art and whats viewed to be art in the recent path. Art isn't just the paintings and sculptures of the past it can be something as simple and complex as a still image captured in time and space.
4. I found the videos to be extremely interesting. They had a ton of information on a newer and interesting topic such as pictures, these videos helped make for a interesting look at the assignment we did early in the semester taking pictures to show elements of art.

Spanish art and Dada and Surrealism

1. I choose the videos on Spanish art and Dada and Surrealism because they give a true look into the mindset of the artist and the time period. They have a much darker but more real view on the life of the time. The art works created where that similar only to that possibly of the dark ages.
2. For the Spanish video is was shocking to see how many famous artist came out of the same era and place people such as Pablo Picasso and Dali to be living and creating works of art in the same time is amazing. Also its impressive to see the outside influences of the world on their works such as influences from France. For the video on Dada and Surrealism it was clear the darkness of the works of art. They were meant to demonstrate the grim realities often faced by everyone in life.
3. The video about Spanish art was good at furthering the understanding of how art in that area developed off of one another. Such as great artist being learned under by other future great artist. It demonstrated how the art forms in that area would develop and lead into Surrealism in other European areas.
4. I enjoyed both films and found them to be beneficial in deeping my understanding of each concept in place. However I believe the video on Surrealism could have been better put together it didn't flow together each section made it harder to see the links between them rather than having clear lines between the styles.

mask project

Black man sticking his tongue out
1. This piece is clear the use of color to make the mask mostly black. I wonder if its done with the intention of it representing it being created in a dark time period. Or does the bight red of the tongue represent the importance of other human features. Theres a clear use of lines in the mask across the face of it, they seem to demonstrate a focus on a aging face.

Classic mask from the Amazon
2. This mask its clear to see its bases from the Amazon. It looks like it blends with the environment. The mask has symmetrical lines on it. The face of it is the exact same no matter the side. Even with  the reddish color of the mask it still has no outstanding color that pops off the page.

https://www.tes.com/lessons/D4BoUS46Ktx3-A/copy-of-african-masks

3. I found this mask and choose to use it due to its extreme complexity. It has so many colors but there isnt a main color that sticks out more than the rest. It has patterns all over it cut by definitive lines to separate the varying patterns.

The finished mask I made is a example of use of color. I mostly used simple colors for the larger portions this allows for the other colors to pop more. I made the nose structure the most predominate part of the face, there is no structure for a mouth. This was done to fit the use of the mask. It would be used in a manner to hide any and all identifying features of the person who wears it.

Buddhism and Hinduism

1. I choose to watch the videos on Buddhism and Hinduism because i had previously learned about both of these religions in my past. For me this offered a new chance to learn more about them and to see how they use art to futher there understanding and worship of the religion itself. Also im close friends with someone who is Buddhist and I found it interesting to see a comparison between what i have learned from them to what I was shown in the videos.
2. For the video on Buddhism it was clear that the main point of focus in the art they use to show respect for Buddha was large temples with pictures and sculptures of Buddha himself or images of the many forms Buddha can take. However for Hinduism there is much less of a emphasis on images to define the religion with the focus of the religion being that nothing in this world can be taken with you, they make much simpler places of worship than the massive complexes for Buddhism.
3. The video on Buddhism explained many things from the reading in further. The one thing i noticed that it expanded on was, how Buddha and Buddhism attracted followers from all walks of life. To Ensure all of the followers where able to understand clearly upon reaching the temples of worship they were designed with sculptures to explain the life of Buddha. This way even those who were unable to read could see first hand and understand the walking life of the Buddha. The video on Hinduism was able to show how those who follow Hinduism are more likely to adapt the idea of not one life but millions of years of life. So they firmly believe they cant take material items with them into the next life. This thought causes them to be more likely in there art work to be more simplistic or if they are complex it often is to show the path to the next life through reincarnation.
4. I felt the films were extremely helpful in giving a basic understanding of Buddhism and Hinduism. Both films were able to very clearly explain the main focus of the religion and the efforts went to by each to demonstrate the love for the religion and how they worship it. Also both videos were able to show the difference between Buddhism and Hinduism which are often thought to be the same or extremely similar when in fact they both have large differences. All in all I found the videos to be very useful.

Hands Drawing

1. I found it quite difficult but interesting to use my hand as a subject for drawing. The hand has so many details with creases and lines I found it difficult to get all of them with the shading for the line. Especially using my opposite hand to try to draw such a detailed item as a hand it was difficult to get all of the lines of my dominant hand.
2. I choose to use a pencil for this drawing. I choose a pencil because I felt it allowed me more control over the lines I was creating to make them lighter or darker. Also allowing me to add width to the lines to make sure they didn't smudge to look like shading.
3. I found it very difficult to create a drawing with my non dominant hand. It was much harder to make sure the lines I was trying to draw were straight in the way I wanted them to go. I notice that many of the lines with my non dominant hand were wavy rather than crisp like I would have liked them to be.
4. Looking at both drawings Im surprised at how close the two actually look to each other. It still is easy to figure out which one I did with my dominate hand and which with my non dominate. But I would say it was successful in demonstrating the ability to draw with both hands proving that art can be done in many ways.
5. I would rather to continue to use my dominate hand to create works of art because I feel it gives me more control over what im doing allowing for less wavy lines and mistakes. However I did enjoy this work and the challenge of using my left hand so id consider using it again to see if I could improve the next time.

Module 9 Video review

1. I choose the video on Albrecht Durer and the one on Velazquez because they are two who I have heard little or none about so I wanted to use this as a chance to make my knowledge of different artist great than only learning about a few. In choosing these two I not only learned about different artist but I learned about lesser known topics such as prints and the different ways both respectively did portraits of people. Durer was highly skilled in demonstrating extreme detail in the age faces of those who he painted and Velazquez was skilled in demonstrating the human aspect of someone who at the time was seen to be less human due to deformities.
2.Both artist were influenced by Italian ideas in there works. Both men had spent time studying the ways of former Italian artist to achieve the ability to simulate the works they were creating. Durer was a very instinctual artist he relied less on scientific fact than his own ideas and thoughts. However Velazquez saw things in a light that was unintentionally scientific in my eyes, With his paintings of the gestures he was humanizing and painting people with deformities for what they were as people.
3. The videos helped to make the connections explained in the reading such as the fact Velazquez worked for the king and all pieces he was asked to created went through Velazquez first despite him working under the king he still was able to do things the way he choose too. The video for Durer showed first hand his influence by going and spending time in Italy in his art work. It gave a chance to see his pieces and how that influence stood out.
4. I felt the videos were very helpful in this case, They were able to offer a much deeper understanding of overall artist in the time period of the Renaissance. Also it showed how many artist from this time were heavily influenced by Italian works. Also they gave me a incite into artist I previously knew very little about and now learning more about them has made them all the more interesting to me.

Module 8

1. I choose the video on the Byzantine and Later Greek art video because of a interest arisen in me due to the mandatory video we had to watch. It made me want to know if the ideas of importance in Greek art continued down the path of being very over defined or if it would return to a more basic description of man in the images.
2. For the How Art Made the World video the key concept is looking into what was deemed important to those who created art at the times of the pieces being made. For the figure of Willendorf it was clear that the important items to the culture was over defined features focused on that of fertility and health. Which did arise a odd question for the design of people in art in Egypt because it seemed as if the only importance was demonstrating the features of the face and hands but the explanation of the ability to repeat the images with the grid made it more clear they were focused not as much in the importance but the accuracy of the pieces. This was evident that art returned back to the focus of whats important to the society in Greece where the art showed the overly athletic build of people.
The second video I watched showed the focus of the way of life of the Greeks in the design of there art and even there architecture, They had examples of there Gods in front of the buildings they designed. This shows the similar result of the demonstration of the body of Greeks because it shows what was important to the culture at the time.
3. The videos both related to the reading by being able to show the examples of the most prominent cultures of the past and most influential cultures on today's society. They showed how the ideas of these cultures hasn't deviated much from one group to another. Those of Mesopotamia were similar to the ideas of those from Egypt or even that of the ancient civilizations that lived in the Egyptian area prior to it becoming a desert area.
4, The videos are extremely helpful in expanding the understanding of what people found to be important to them in there society. For something to be important enough to be a common theme in all art of a time period or location in the world, that demonstrates the importance of learning the values and reasoning associated along with the art. The demonstration of the over exaggerated body of women in ancient society showed the importance of fertility that meant they were heavily focused in the survival of there culture to pass it on. This is still true today which is why the mother figure is so important in our society today.

M7 video review

I choose to watch the second and last videos of the list. I choose the two due to the connection with more modern architecture.

1. For the second video the key points were to explain the challenges that face architects now with limited space for buildings. The battles has became to choose to build up or to find new places to create individual buildings. With building up there are challenges in them self due to needing the structure to be far more sound in its building to be able to with stand the winds it will face. For the last video that I watched the key points of it were to look into how to make buildings more economically and environmentally friendly. The use of roof top gardens and solar power are two main ways that were brought up to help counter the argument of fossil fuels to maintain energy in buildings, but these still aren't the most cost effective ways to do things yet. The search will continue to try to find a way to make these more cost effective to save the planet.

2. The videos that were watched helped to future the understanding of the building and thought of architecture. The videos did a goof job of demonstrating the different types of buildings such as a single level building compared to a sky scraper that can be many stories high. The videos emphasized the usage of polls and supports to keep the buildings up right in the elements with a higher taller building it requires more to keep it in the air than it does for that of a shorter building. The base of each building has to be able to support the weight of the building with the maximum amount of weight inside of it. This refers to the load bearing ability of the base which also differs in the different sized buildings.

3.The videos are extremely helpful in creating a better understanding  of how architects make the buildings we see everyday. It showed how much different the planning for a sky scraper ends up being from that of a one story building. I would have been interested to see a combination of the two videos I watched to see on what scale can they use the green energy systems such a solar power and use of wind to heat and cool a building. Id like to see if those ideas can be scaled up to be done on a sky scraper level.

4. I choose the videos I did because they were focused more in modern architecture. Which with a slight background in the subject it interested me more than the history of it. I took classes in architecture and design when I was in high school the classes were college level so with my understanding it was more interesting to see the practical and modern usage of the topics.

Video Review

1. For the video on sculpting I found the key concept that I wasn't previously aware of to be the effort and begins of making a sculpture. From finding the right piece of grant by testing each one to make sure you don't get a sound that indicates there being a crack. That's something I never thought about but if there's a crack then the whole piece could come undone at any moment. The second concept I found interesting was that due to the pieces being three dimensional and all of the cuts of grant being different each piece had to be created by looking at another there is no way for casting so the level of detail is amazing to me.
For the second video I found it interesting that there isn't more casting for the glass making. The fact that the majority of pieces are created by guiding the glass into shape with either a mold to move the glass in with a circle movement keeping it in shape or using a wet paper to move it by hand I thought much more was done with molding.
2. These videos did a great job to compliment the reading. These videos were able to give a look into the background of the reading to show more of a history of the sculpture and how it has progressed but also not changed entirely in the last few centuries. In the glass making the videos showed the techniques they discussed of casting and and molding of the pieces to make them into the proper shape.
3. The videos I felt helped greatly, they were able to show me more about sculpting than I ever would have learned. In the past all I ever saw or knew was the face value and seeing the finished product. It is refreshing to see all of the work that goes into a piece. For instillation its interesting to notice the subtle things that are in the details, on the cover everything seems to be so much easier than in the end it is.

Blog Summary

This project was very interesting to me, it allowed me a chance to do something I have never done before. I never have been one to take pictures. Honestly I avoid pictures I don't like to be in them and am not good at taking them at the best angles to make things look better. This project gave me a chance to see how angles and lighting make all the difference when it comes to the outcome of a picture. I never knew the amount of effort that went into something so simple as snapping a photo until I needed to focus on the different elements that are so evident in all forms of art that we see on a daily basis.
